Oral history interviews, 1954-1984.

1954-1984

The oral histories were conducted for the purposes of investigating the history of the Hagley Museum site and supporting its programs of development and interpretation. They were conducted by museum staff in two series, the first between 1954 and 1974 and the second between 1980 and 1984. The first series included survivors from among the last generation of powder workers to work in the Hagley Yard, as well as acquaintances of Mrs. Crowninshield, the last owner of the Eleutherian Mills residence, and Luther D. Reed, the first general director of the museum. The second group are primarily children of the last generation of powder workers, who describe their childhoods and life in the Wilmington area before World War II.

The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder. In 1902 three younger du Pont cousins: T.
